Clustered in the downtown area, dozens of murals bring color to otherwise blank walls throughout the Tucson area.
Some of the murals are visual protests against laws like Arizona’s “show your papers” law SB1070, but others are focused on positive themes, including a huge mosaic that forms the word Kindness near the UniSource Energy Tower.
Art collectives regularly adorn their buildings with chaotic, vibrant imagery, but so do many businesses in the area, giving Tucson’s downtown and arts district a distinct feel.

During the Institute, students are working journalists supervised by reporters and editors from The New York Times and The Boston Globe. Opportunities for students include reporting, copy editing, photography, Web production, print and Web design, and video journalism. Institute graduates now work at major news organizations, including The Associated Press, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post and The New York Times itself, and dozens of midsize news organizations.
